Just some of my favorite San Diego Locations for Family Photo Sessions
As a San Diego family photographer, one of the first questions I’m asked is: “Where should we take our family photos?” The good news is, San Diego is full of beautiful backdrops…whether you love the outdoors, the beach, or the comfort of your own home. Over the years, I’ve gathered a few favorite spots that always create timeless portraits.
Here are my top locations for family photo sessions in San Diego:
Your Home

There’s truly nothing more personal than photographing your family in your own home. This is the space where your children play, your pets feel most comfortable, and your everyday memories unfold. At-home sessions allow for a relaxed and natural environment…perfect for capturing authentic family moments.
Harry Griffen Park (La Mesa)

Tucked away in La Mesa, Harry Griffen Park is one of my go-to outdoor locations. It’s easy to get to, has free parking, and offers wide open spaces for kids to run around. The best part? It’s usually not crowded with other photographers, so we have plenty of room to create without distractions.
Crystal Pier (Pacific Beach)

While the beach isn’t always my first choice, I love photographing at Crystal Pier. The wooden pier adds a unique element that makes this more than just a typical beach session. Be prepared for a little walking in the sand, though…it’s not the easiest spot for elderly family members with mobility concerns.
Windansea Beach (La Jolla)

This La Jolla gem is a classic for a reason. Windansea Beach features gorgeous rock formations that provide texture and great seating spots for portraits. Depending on the season, it can be a peaceful and quiet setting—perfect for families who love a relaxed beach vibe.
Mission Trails (Santee)

Mission Trails is one of my all-time favorite locations for family portraits. It offers so many different looks—from big open fields with mountain views to shady trails lined with trees. One of my favorite spots features a gorgeous old tree, and another area requires a short walk but rewards you with sweeping open spaces. Just note: it can be popular during the holidays!
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (San Diego)

Peñasquitos Preserve is full of variety…trails, rustic barns, and sunlight that filters beautifully through the trees. Whether you’re looking for a natural, woodsy feel or open trails, this location has a little bit of everything.
Choosing Your Perfect Location
Whether you prefer the comfort of home, the energy of the beach, or the peacefulness of a trail, San Diego has the perfect spot for your family portraits. I’m always happy to suggest locations that fit your family’s style, or explore a place that’s meaningful to you.
